Bathroom Getting Older? 2 Problems To Watch Out For And What To Do About Them

Posted on

If your bathroom has not changed in some time, you need to watch out for problems that may appear. This will allow you to make the necessary repairs quickly before the problem becomes much worse and more expensive to fix. Below are two problems to get you started.

Toilet Backups

It is common for a toilet to back up from time to time, but if it happens often, this is a problem. If you cannot get the clog out using a plunger, you should hire a toilet backup repair service. They have an auger that they can use to get deep into the pipe to get the clog out.

If your home has a septic tank and you are having problems with backups in other areas of your home also, such as sinks in other bathrooms, the main sewer line could be damaged or backed up, and this would take a professional to unclog. If your tank has not been pumped in a long time, this is the time to do this. If there are trees growing near the septic tank, the roots can spread and break the pipes.

You can do things on your own to help stop your toilet from backing up if your sewer line is not clogged up. Do not flush anything but toilet paper down the toilet. This may be cleaning wipes you use, paper towels, napkins, women's hygiene products, etc.

Drain Problems

Because the bathroom is older, there may be soap and scum built up inside the drain. This can cause your bathroom and kitchen drains to have constant clogging issues. If you just purchased your home, you have no idea if the drains have been cleaned well or what has been put down into the drain.

If you have a septic tank, you may smell sewer smells coming from your bathroom drains. If you do, this may be due to having a biofilm that has built up inside of the drain. This happens if the drains are dirty or have had a lot of clogs in the past.

A more serious problem this could be is sewer gases escaping from the drainage pipes. This might be caused by a blocked vent, or your sewer lines may be leaking.  No matter which, a plumber should be called to take care of this problem.

There are other problems you can have in an older bathroom, such as damaged older plumbing pipes, shifting pipes, and outdated fixtures.
